Diploma Course - Apprenticeship

An integral part of the Teacher Training Diploma programme the apprenticeship at BCY provides a unique opportunity to work with leading yoga teachers within a vibrant and busy yoga studio. The apprenticeship provides an invaluable opportunity to become familiar with different styles of yoga, different teaching methods and to cement through personal support your own method and approach. In addition to this you will have both administrative and customer-based responsibilities to provide you with real, practical skills and experience for your career. Through personal mentoring and guidance on developing a personal approach to teaching and on managing the business aspects of yoga, you will learn practical tools to propel you forward on an enriching and fulfilling teaching career.

The details of your apprenticeship are to be decided alongside your tutor at a personal mentor meeting to be arranged.

Coursework

In addition to the practicum listed above you will be asked to complete an apprenticeship diary with the following information:

- written detailed observations on classes, including practice taught, approach to teaching, adjustments given/not given

- review and reflection of your assistance and any adjustments given in class

- and/ or a written analysis of business operations/ marketing information, where this is more helpful to the trainee

You have three options to complete this apprenticeship:

Option 1: One-Week Intensive

  • Daily attendance, observation and assisting role in classes and workshops offered at the studio
  • Develop your understanding of running a busy studio including class scheduling, teacher cover, marketing and  financial management

Option 2: Three-Month Programme

  • The same topics as above are covered spread out over three months, allowing you to focus on observing/ assisting a specific tutor.
  • Attendance, observation and assisting is in one class a week for the three months period.

Option 3: Retreat/ Workshop Apprenticeship

  • Exclusive to BCY, the Retreat Apprenticeship Programme offers the opportunity for every Diploma student  to become involved in planning and teaching on a yoga workshop or retreat
  • You will work alongside a tutor to design and market a workshop or yoga retreat. You will be required to assist each step of the way in the preparation of the retreat: producing leaflets, online marketing, dealing with enquiries etc.
  • You will be asked to assist or part-teach on the workshop/ retreat (or teach alone where appropriate), some guidance will be given on your teaching schedule. On retreat the apprentice will meet their own costs, but not pay the full retreat fee.
  • As an apprentice on retreat you will be expected to "hold the space" alongside the teacher and to assist throughout the week in teaching and any practical issues.
  • You will be required to review the event and your experiences in writing.

Next Course Dates: See retreat page for details of retreats currently on offer, it may be possible to create a retreat/ workshop specifically to fulfill your training needs - discuss with your tutor. This section of the course is accredited by Yoga Alliance and counts toward certification at the 500-hour level.
