Ashtanga Yoga
The most physically challenging form of yoga, this flowing sequence of postures is threaded together on the breath. The practice is designed to cleanse and purify the physical body and nervous system in preparation for the practices of meditation and pranayama. The specific features of this practice are the continued awareness of breath to carry you in a "vinyasa" system throughout the practice. This gives a meditative quality to the movement: over time the breath itself carries you through the postures. The practitioner learns to use specific energetic locks or "bandhas" to stimulate movement of energy through the body and to focus the mind by engaging specific focal points for the eyes ("drishti").
Ashtanga Vinyasa is traditionally taught as a 6 day a week practice with classes in the early morning. This is a way of transforming your life, your energy levels, your physique and your mind- creating stillness through breath awareness
Beginners to Ashtanga Yoga should attend the Ashtanga Beginners Course even if they are familiar with other styles of yoga.
If you are confident with the sun salutations and at least part of the Primary Series you may attend Ashtanga Improvers, the Mysore or Led Primary Classes.
This practice is not suitable for those with restrictive injuries or serious health issues, although it can be successfully used for weight loss.
Beginners and Mysore classes are limited to a max. of 12 students per teacher.
Mysore Style - having learned the opening sequence in the beginners classes you can attend these sessions, where you will practice the sequence as far as you know it. During Mysore style practice you receive one-to-one attention from the teacher who will guide you according to your own specific needs and capability. This system originates in Mysore, India (hence the name) and all our Ashtanga teachers have practiced in this traditional way, bringing you an authentic Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga experience.
Led Primary Series - a chance to practice the sequence as with instruction from the teacher who guides the whole class through the postures. This practice is traditionally done on Friday or Saturday to end the week's yoga practice. We offer 2 levels of led practice - Intermediate (level 2) and Advanced (level 3).
